What is spiritual wellbeing?
Spiritual wellbeing is bound by neither tradition nor doctrine; instead, spiritual wellbeing is characterized by the diversity of humanity, and all the beautiful and challenging things that come with being a member of the human family. To be spiritually well does not mean that one has reached a particular endpoint, or a level of enlightenment. Indeed, I would argue that the journey to spiritual wellbeing is one that we can never expect to complete.
The life-long journey towards spiritual wellbeing is a process that is both deeply personal, and profoundly communal. We must be able to look both within ourselves and beyond ourselves into others to nourish our spirits. I believe that the most spiritually well people amongst us are those who feel free to explore their own traditions, and others, to find what nourishes their hearts and what serves others around them.
In a spiritually, religiously, and philosophically diverse place like Wake Forest, the Chaplain’s Office is charged with no small task in seeking to foster spiritual wellbeing for our community. Our approach is to provide space and opportunity for all worldviews to explore, engage, and express their spiritual selves within the context of a loving and affirming community. We offer programs that provide opportunities to cultivate new spiritual practices; we encourage conversations that broaden our understanding of the other; we facilitate liturgies that celebrate the unity amid the beautiful diversity of our campus community. The Chaplain’s Office is committed to welcoming all our community members into the journey for spiritual wellbeing, and offering support for them along their path.
